CHEYENNE – It’s not often that a bull rider takes home a six- figure check from a single stop on the rodeo trail.
But that is exactly what Douglas Duncan of Alvin, Texas, did recently when he earned $100,000 at the Calgary Stampede.
He then made his way south to the 114th Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo for another chance to boost his earnings.
He is trying to become one of the few cowboys to qualify for the finals for both the Professional Bull Riders and the National Finals Rodeo for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
The big payday in Calgary already has qualified him for the PBR finals as he is now seventh on that money list. The top 40 qualify.
“It was my first time up there, and it felt good as I got on some really good bulls,” Duncan said. “It all worked out in my favor.”
Duncan, 23, competed in the Frontier Days Rodeo during afternoon performances Monday and Tuesday to see if he could better his No. 16 ranking in the PRCA world standings.
His first bolt out of the chute Monday netted him an 83, tied for fifth.

The Folds of Honor Foundation, along with LifeLock, an industry leader in proactive identity theft protection, applaud Retired Private First Class Zaneta Adams for her service to her country and recognize her children as recipients of FHF educational scholarships.
According to a release, the scholarships are awarded to spouses or children of fallen or disabled service members. Though already recognized as a major supporter of FHF, LifeLock will honor former service men and women’s sacrifices by donating $50 to FHF for every new adult annual LifeLock membership enrolled on July 4.
PFC Adams enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1998 and enjoyed her service, which included assignments in emergency-dispatch and drug- enforcement at Ft. Huachuca, Ariz. While preparing for deployment to Iraq in February 2005, PFC Adams was involved in an accident which seriously injured her back. She underwent surgery and rehabilitation at Ft. Seward, Ga., in hopes of joining her unit in Iraq but was unable to return to duty. After leaving the Army in January 2006, PFC Adams worked various jobs but was ultimately unable to continue working due to her injuries.
PFC Adams’ six children were selected to receive the future-use scholarships when they are old enough. “I truly believe the Folds of Honor scholarship program takes the weight off soldiers’ minds when they are injured and having to take care of their children. I know now that whatever happens to me, my children will be taken care of,” said Adams.
FHF has made it possible for selected families to have peace of mind knowing their family members will have significant support to pursue higher education. The foundation has awarded over 1,000 scholarships in three years, and plans to award 250 throughout 2010 to recipients across the nation. Through partnerships, such as with LifeLock, FHF will be able to continue supporting military families.
